Emergency centre with infinite reach

The BG Trauma Clinic in Ludwigshafen is one of the largest centres for trauma surgery in Europe and is among Germany's most prestigious addresses. Moreover, it has the most up-to-date centre for the treatment of severe and very severe burns at its disposal. The clinic also specialises in spinal cord injuries, orthopaedics and intensive care, pain therapy and rehabilitation medicine. As a trauma centre, the clinic enjoys an excellent reputation that reaches far beyond the local area. Since April 2005, the clinic has also officially provided care to burns victims from Alsace. This has been agreed between the health insurance institutions, the regional administration of Alsace and the BG Clinic and is an important step towards cross-border cooperation in the health sector.

Fast, competent assistance

In terms of personnel, organisation and medical equipment, the clinic is ideally prepared for the provision of emergency medical care. A highly specialised team of doctors, nurses and technical staff are available to provide care to severely injured patients around the clock. Indispensable in the chain of survival: "Christoph 5". This is one of the first German rescue helicopters and has been stationed here since 1973. It is called upon over 1,000 times a year and operates in a radius of up to 70 km. Since 2004, the clinic has also provided the staff for the first intensive-transport vehicle in Rhineland-Palatinate. By the end of its first year, the mobile intensive care unit had already transported 300 severely ill patients from hospital to hospital. In the following year, the clinic became part of a unique nationwide rescue service model: since then, it has been one of four emergency medical centres in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Expertise for BG

The clinic provides expertise throughout the entire rehabilitation process, especially for the statutory accident insurer. Example: Centre of Excellence for Rehab Advice. This concerns a prognosis for medical and vocational rehabilitation in cases with a complicated healing or problematic reintegration process. This check is conducted during a short stay in the clinic. The result is convincing: within a short period the service has already become a central component of therapy management.
A six-monthly quality panel, in which the managing directors of the district administrations and the chief physicians of the clinic are represented, aims to improve collaboration between the professional associations and the clinic. BG-specific issues are discussed, in particular the coordination of therapy management.
The hospital has 418 beds. Each year, an average of 10,000 inpatients and some 20,000 outpatients are treated. In 2008, the surgical team performed some 38,000 surgical procedures. The "Verein für Berufsgenossenschaftliche Heilbehandlung Heidelberg e.V." (Association of BG Medical Treatment Heidelberg e.V.) is the clinic's sponsor.
