115 years of knowledge and experience -
Bergmannsheil is well prepared for the future
Bergmannsheil was receptive to innovation from the very beginning: as early as in 1892 with the creation of the "Medico-Mechanical Institute" or the installation of an "x-ray cabinet" only one year after Konrad Röntgen discovered x-ray radiation. In the following decades, the disciplines and research spectrum of Bergmannsheil were refined and specialised. In the surgical core area, priorities were consistently set in the wake of medical development in order to meet the "with all appropriate means" care remit of the professional associations. In 1952 the Department of Spinal Cord Injuries was founded, in 1964 the independent Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery followed. In 1977, Bergmannsheil became the University Clinic of the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University in Bochum. This development turned out to be a stroke of luck for Bergmannsheil: support of the "clinical core business" by the research skills and capacities and the integration of research strategies in the clinical care have proven themselves. In this manner, Bergmannsheil remains attractive for top employees, whose performance in turn guarantees the future of the clinic. 2005 was characterised by major construction projects at Bergmannsheil: the middle of the year saw the celebration of the topping-out ceremony of the new ward block, which was taken into operation at the end of 2006 with 250 beds. Construction of the new supply and disposal centre saw great progress, in which the first phase of construction with cogeneration, emergency power generators and boiler is already in operation. In the autumn of 2005 Bergmannsheil opened a palliative care unit with four beds in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive and Pain Therapy. The Centre of Excellence for mental disorders after an occupational accident exceeded all expectations in the first year of its creation: the high level of utilisation shows that the centre meets the requirements of the professional associations and their insured members to a large degree. Bergmannsheil, as well as the other facilities and operations belonging to the professional association situated on the grounds, is an owner-operated enterprise of the "Bergbau-Berufsgenossenschaft" (German Miners' Mutual Benefit Society). This includes eight clinics and two institutions with a total of 17 inpatient units. Emphasis is placed on trauma and reconstructive surgery with the Surgical Department and the Department of Plastic Surgery and Severe Burns Injuries.
More than 17,000 inpatients and 50,000 outpatients are treated annually at Bergmannsheil. Bergmannsheil and its affiliated institutions have a total of 2,250 employees.
